Our Story
My name is Khaterah, and I am one of the co-founders of Rawzana.
Rawzana was created by a group of deeply concerned individuals who share a common belief: that Afghan youth deserve more than temporary survival — they deserve opportunity, dignity, and the chance to build meaningful futures. Together, we started Rawzana with a mission to support long-term educational and vocational programs that empower young people in Afghanistan with the skills, knowledge, and guidance needed to shape their own paths forward.
In Farsi, Rawzana means “a ray” — a ray of light, a ray of possibility, a ray of hope.
That meaning is more than just a name to us. It reflects the heart of our mission and the future we hope to help create.
I grew up in Afghanistan, where poverty was never something distant or abstract. It was part of everyday life. I witnessed families struggling to afford basic necessities, children forced to leave school too soon, and talented young people losing hope because opportunities simply did not exist. These are not statistics to me — they are lived experiences that continue to shape who I am and why Rawzana was founded.
Today, nearly half of Afghanistan’s population lives below the poverty line, according to estimates from organizations such as the World Bank and the United Nations. Behind those numbers is a deeper truth: poverty in Afghanistan is not temporary. It is systemic, generational, and deeply rooted.
Over the past two decades, billions of dollars in humanitarian aid have entered Afghanistan through emergency relief, food distribution, and short-term assistance. These efforts have saved lives, and they matter deeply. But despite those efforts, millions of people remain trapped in cycles of poverty, and millions of young people still grow up without access to lasting opportunity.
At Rawzana, we believe survival alone is not enough.
Real change happens when we invest in long-term growth — when we help young people gain education, practical skills, mentorship, and the confidence to pursue their goals. Because while temporary aid may help someone through today, education and vocational training can transform an entire future.
That belief is the foundation of everything we do.
Rawzana is committed to supporting programs that empower Afghan youth through long-term educational and vocational opportunities. We want to help young boys and girls build independence, discover their potential, and create sustainable futures for themselves and their communities. Our focus is not simply on providing aid, but on creating pathways toward self-reliance, purpose, and possibility.
